DJ SNAKE IS FIRST FRENCH ACT TO HAVE TWO #1S ON AMERICAN TOP 40

It’s been a big year for DJ Snake, what with releasing his debut album and playing around the world for hundreds of thousands of adoring fans. He’s also made history this year, no matter how small the achievement.

DJ Snake is now the first French act to have two #1 on American Top 40. With “Let Me Love You” charting hard thanks to the contribution from Justin Bieber, DJ Snake follow’s up 2015’s “Lean On” with Major Lazer, which was #1 the week of September 19 last year.

As the tweet below also informs, even Daft Punk and David Guetta only have one #1 on the chart apiece.

Congrats, DJ Snake

GALANTIS DEBUT BRAND NEW TRACK

During Galantis‘ San Jose stop on their California College tour on November 16, the Swedish duo premiered a brand new single called “Pillow Fight” to a crowd of screaming fans. The track features a yet to be named male vocalist (possibly Matthew Koma?), and a piano melody worthy of any festival main stage.

With an ethereal, vocal-centered introduction, the song quickly builds towards a highly euphoric peak of energy, where a simple but catchy melody carries above thunderous kicks and shining percussion. As the vocals return to the spotlight, the track becomes a monumental singalong, sure to be learned and remembered by Galantis’ worldwide fan base in no time.

Listen to the full preview below, and keep your eyes peeled for an official release date.

LISTEN TO MAJOR LAZER’S SUNSET SET FROM THIS YEAR’S BURNING MAN

Burning Man may not technically be a “music festival,” but there’s still a healthy amount of music that goes on there over the course of the gathering. Major Lazer made their second appearance in a row this year, and played a special sunset set at the Robot Heart camp.

For whatever reason, though Burning Man concluded months ago, the set was only just uploaded to Soundcloud. Check it out below to hear a side of Major Lazer you won’t ever hear at a typical festival.

Happy Thanksgiving!

LISTEN TO STEVE AOKI’S REMIX OF “WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE”

When news came out that Steve Aoki was remixing “Welcome To The Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance, reactions were extremely varied. Some were excited, many were worried… with a track as iconic as this, there’s a lot of room for error and a slim margin for success. According to MCR’s own Gerard Way, however, Aoki knocked this one out of the park, telling Buzzfeed that Steve kept “the intensity” and “purpose” of the song.

In our opinion, there’s a lot about the original that’s been lost in exchange for a more party-centric song that you can sing along to. However, if that’s all you’re looking for, if you’ve been thinking, “You know what, I just wanna rage to Welcome To The Black Parade,” then this is the song for you.

THE WEEKND UNLEASHES NEW DAFT PUNK COLLAB

It’s been a few weeks since “Starboy” by The Weeknd came out. Featuring production from Daft Punk, we don’t think he could have chosen a more stellar first single for his forthcoming album, due out a week from tomorrow. Tonight, he has released the second collaboration titled “I Feel It Coming” and it couldn’t be more different from “Starboy.”

This new track sounds a lot more like Random Access Memories than “Starboy” did, making use of soft guitar plucks and some ’80s style piano synthesizers. Not only that, we also have the classic Daft Punk vocoders in the mix, making this feel like a true collaboration.

“I Feel It Coming” is the final track on The Weeknd’s Starboy which could explain the laidback tone of the track, as the album winds down.

Will people still like this more than “Starboy”? It remains to be seen, but chances are we’ll have a consensus by tomorrow morning. You can listen to it on all outlets here or via Apple Music below.

3LAU EXPLAINS “WHY DJ MAG MATTERS” AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE ASIAN MARKET

In the wake of DJ Mags top 100 for 2016 freshly off the presses, the yearly outpourings of scorn and condemnation have already begun to seep out of the dance music community. The list is most often criticised for the integrity and skill of the DJs it tends to place near the top, as well as the methods some take to make sure their name is high enough on the pole.

In a post uploaded to his Facebook page this afternoon, 3LAU decided to combat the hate with a very particular explanation as to why the same DJ Mag ranking matters so much to those on the list. The main factor? Asia’s burgeoning dance music scene.

“When a DJ gets booked in most Asian countries to play a club, their fee is heavily dependent on their DJ mag ranking,” he wrote.

Rather than base performance fees on factors like social media numbers, play counts or previous ticket sales history, 3LAU wrote, club owners in Asia are forced to base their judgment about a DJ’s value on the Top 100 list. Because the scene in the region so new, this is one of the only metrics available for them. Adding in the extreme government internet censorship in countries like China that block out fans from experiencing music discovery in the same way as the West, the Top 100 list becomes a necessary beacon to gauge the DJs’ popularity.

“So, when the business men and club owners in Asia look to book DJs who might maximize their table / bottle sales revenue, they rely on the DJ Mag chart to assess relative popularity.”

For those artists looking to tour in Asian markets, 3LAU wrote, the cost of maintaining a high chart position on the list is worth it when thinking about the probability of increased DJ fees. Keeping this information secret has been a trend among DJs and managers alike due to the prevailing thought that its reveal might affect their future income, he continued.

RIFF RAFF BACK AT IT WITH NEW SINGLE PRODUCED BY DIPLO

So we never thought this would be a thing, but Riff Raff and DJ Afterthought have teamed up with Diplo for a respectable record titled “Vibe.”

The atmosphere of the track goes perfectly with the album’s namesake, Balloween, and features a lazily strummed guitar and cadence that screams of the breakthrough style of artists like Shwayze and Asher Roth.

Releasing on October 20th, Balloween is proving to be anything but what we expected from Riff Raff’s comedic personality. The LP will feature loads of guest production, from Mr. Oizo, Calvin Harris, and even Dirt Nasty of all people… Get hyped.
